And it Finally Hits Home

Following two cases in neighboring Vermont and a couple to the west of us in New York, hospitals finally began taking precautions. When I take my wife over to Vermont for Dialysis, we are stopped and questioned in the lobby of the hospital and issued a sticker to prove we have been cleared to enter. Since people can be contagious for a couple of weeks prior to developing symptoms, this isn't too reassuring to me, though it is better than the "anyone can walk in" policy previously in place.

Nursing Homes are simply banning visitation, except under strictly limited and controlled conditions.

Being we are both at major risk for death from the virus, we have started taking precautions, though it draws strange glances from those who take none! I bought a couple of 3M Half-facepiece reusable respirators a couple of weeks ago from Amazon and some P100 filters for them, as all regular masks had disappeared from the shelves. The respirators doubled in price soon after I bought them! (The wife hasn't used hers yet as she got one of those earloop masks from someone, but that needs to be thrown away now). They aren't bad to wear and breathe through but the goggles I bought locally for the eyes (swim goggles) are continually fogging up, are uncomfortable, and also I can't read while wearing them. They do seal around the eyes, though.
Yesterday the closures and postponements began in earnest, and accelerated today. The St. Patrick's Day parades were cancelled, most sporting events are cancelled, as are large meetings. Some schools are closing.

Our church decided to postpone the Sportsmen's Banquet that was supposed to be held this Saturday, but is holding the Men's Breakfast and the Sunday Services as usual. We are also looking into videotaping the service for those who don't or can't come out. Older people and those with underlying medical conditions are encouraged not to come.

The President is supposed to declare a National Emergency at 3 PM today.

The stores have been cleaned out of hand sanitizer, lysol spray, rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, paper towels, and (for some strange reason no one can figure out), toilet paper. My daughter texted me a few minutes ago that down her way (Clifton Park) the grocery shelves are now being emptied!

The stock market has crashed. It was down over 2000 points yesterday, but is back up 675 today. Airlines are cutting back and laying off. Cruise Lines are shut down. More importantly, local businesses like restaurants, theaters, etc. are really hurting already as people stay home in droves. They are beginning to lay off.

May you live in interesting times!

God is still in control, and maybe this will make us slow down as a nation and think about the path we have been following.

Time for a nap and then a walk!
