May 7: Busy day running around for medical stuff

Today I took the wife to Bennington, VT for an ultrasound early on, then to Saratoga, NY for a pre-op meeting just before lunch. At Saratoga Hospital, I had to sit in the car and wait for an hour listening to music. No visitors allowed due to Covid-19. Stopped on the way back at a trailhead to see if there was a good phone signal. When she has the surgery, I'll go hiking if the weather is nice! Better than sitting in the car.

Her wheelchair collapsed when we stopped at a greenhouse to try to find some pansies, so we went on home. I spent the afternoon disassembling the wheelchair and arc-welding it back together. It is suffering from metal fatigue! Should ask for my $10 back, only had it about 3 or 4 years now! But it is nice and stiff now, so might as well keep using it. Hopefully she won't have to use it forever.

We originally tried to get one through Medicare, but we needed a narrow one for the mobile home. The first "approved dealer" we talked to said we didn't get a choice and couldn't look at them in advance, they brought them to the house and you got whatever was in the warehouse. I called the insurance company and complained, so they gave us the address of another dealer. We drove there and ended up going for miles on a barely plowed dirt road until we came to an empty garage sitting in undisturbed snowdrifts. When we finally got the dealer on the phone he said the same thing as the first. Pretty obvious these "dealers" just work from home, go to a central warehouse, get a wheelchair, and deliver it to your house at a big markup to the taxpayer. You are not allowed by Medicare to buy directly from the manufacturer. What a rip-off.  I went to Community Warehouse, got a cheap used one the right size at our wn expense, and fixed it up. All that stuff through Medicare using private companies is a rip off. You have to pay copays you don't owe and never get the money refunded or credited. The insurance paperwork is usually messed up. I can't wait to see "Medicare for All". Everything will cost ten times what it should and the taxpayers will fund it while suppliers line their pockets.

The church elders' Zoom Meeting for tonight got put off. We have to give the grandsons a Messenger video call soon. Supper is cooking. Looking forward to tomorrow night's snow - NOT!
