January in December

Well, the cold wave has hit White Creek, and it is supposed to get even colder as the week goes on. It was 2 deg. F this morning and is up to a balmy 5 deg. now. Much of the surrounding area seems to have been even colder, below zero in many places.

I am glad our daughter and son-in-law got the driveway plowed for us Christmas Day and that yesterday I got the roof raked off and the rest of the snow moved before this cold hit. We also got a load of heating oil in.

Both the snow and cold are unusual these days. When I was a boy we often seem to have seen temperatures well below zero and large amounts of snow. Temperatures have moderated so that it seldom gets below zero, and that usually only in the first 3 weeks of January. In the 1970's I remember a lot of snow, but in the 1980's we had very little. Most of the ski areas that couldn't make their own snow closed up. Snowmobiles slowly disappeared.

Now we seem to be heading back to more normal weather. Perhaps this is caused by the dimming of the sun http://www.ibtimes.com/sun-may-be-dimming-nasa-confirm-declining-luminosity-using-spacexs-payload-2629453.If so, increased CO2 in the atmosphere might be a good thing in the short term.

In any case, I am a lot older than when we lived in Saskatchewan and I worked outside regularly in temperatures far below zero F! You do feel the cold (and heat) a lot more as you get older.
