“The Enemies of Writing”
The Enemies of Writing
Janis Ian shared the
above article on Facebook, and it is well worth reading.
I would put a
different emphasis on it than she does. I am not personally obsessed
with Donald Trump, and don’t believe that politicians of any stripe
are going to solve our problems. Nor is Federal, State, or Local
Government. Government causes more problems than it solves and the
less of it there is the better. I am becoming more and more of a
libertarian.
I do believe that
Political Correctness is one of the greatest threats facing America
today. Few who depend on working for an income dare to speak our
their true thoughts and beliefs about the increasing total nonsense
being shoved down the throats of Americans today. While you may not
yet go to prison, you will often lose your job. The standard liberal
saying of “I may not agree with what you are saying, but I will
defend to the death your right to say it” has been thrown out and
replaced with “If what you say offends me, I will see you lose your
job and you will probably be sued.” This is not liberalism, this is
tyranny.
It is also very
foolish, as foolish as fastening down the safety valve on a steam
locomotive because the noise is annoying. It will be peaceful and
quiet for a time, until the explosion comes and many are injured and
die. Folks who lived in their own little peaceful bubble where
everyone thought just like themselves were totally shocked when Trump
won. They heard only what they wanted to hear and were ignorant of
anyone and anything outside their circle. That is nothing to what is
coming when the reaction against political correctness breaks free.
And finally there is
the fact that the pendulum always swings. The censorship you use
against others now will eventually be used by them against you.
Freedom of speech and open discussion are always better than
censorship and tyranny.
